I just wanted to add another part to my "Driving in Melbourne" post since I have finally hit the road on my own.
After about a week of being chauffered around by John Paul; I finally took the plunge and got behind the wheel. It honestly was one of the wierdest experiences ever - everything is reversed on the road AND in your car. You are putting your car in gear with your left hand vs. your right and you are reaching over your right shoulder to buckle your seatbelt. It sounds silly until you try it for the first time after driving in the US for 11 years!
I don't remember being this nervous even after I first got my permit at 15 or license at 16...but you also grow up seeing your parents drive and already understand most of the rules before you ever have to drive on your own.
The good thing is that now John Paul knows how I feel being in the passenger seat! I think as a driver we naturally favor the left side of the lane to stay as far away from on-coming traffic as possible; but its pretty nervewracking for the person riding beside you when you are inches away from the cars parked on the far left side of the road.
Although it is getting easier, no one will have to worry about me multi-tasking while driving like I do back home. No eating, talking, and/or applying make up while behind the wheel!
